Reasons why one should learn English


One of the most broadly used languages

Even though it comes second to Mandarin in amount of speakers, English is the language one may use broadly, as it is spoken in many countries unlike any other language. This goes to show that English is a language that shall provide you the greatest benefit for your hard work; regardless of hardship, there is no purpose in dedicating oneself to learning a second or a foreign language that you will never have the occasion to speak.

Excluding the UK, an astounding number of 60 from the world’s 196 countries have chosen English as their official language among which the USA, Australia, Canada, and New Zealand. Moreover, English is the official language of the European Union, the United Nations, NATO and the European Free Trade Association, not to mention many Commonwealth countries. In addition to all of the above, English has been put into use as a second language in many other countries such as Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Germany and Holland. Finally, about 1.5 billion people around the World speak English – and an additional 1 billion are in the course of learning this language.

Admission to the best universities in the world

English is recognised like the symbol of sophisticated education. Universities such as Oxford, Cambridge and the well-known Ivy League have the top spots at each world education association charts. Since they are all English-speaking, in order to gain access to these universities one needs to be fluent in English. If one finishes their higher education at such an institution, their future employment interviews would be successful without failure, due to the celebrated name of the university on the CV. For students whose mother tongue is not English, an English proficiency test is a requirement during the admission process as a proof of their academic knowledge of English. The sooner one begins their preparations the better. The more time and effort is invested into the process of learning the English language the more positive the outcome of the application.

Find joy in the written word

If someone desires to master the English language, they will have the opportunity to enjoy in literature of the world’s most prominent writers, in the original written language. The poems of Shakespeare, Keats, Byron, and many others will present themselves with an entirely different complexity of emotions, when one is familiar with the language. English language learners can indulge in significant literary classics as Wuthering Heights, Jane Eyre, 1984, Animal Farm, Pride and Prejudice, Vanity Fair, Ulysses, The Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man, and many, many more. Translations of these works hardly ever succeed in captivating the writer’s original thought, it would be better if one is able to read it in English and truly grasp its meaning. Through reading and comprehending the written word learners are able to absorb new vocabulary, thus improving their writing and speaking skills.

The language of business opportunities

Being bilingual or multilingual in the world of business makes a person a more desired employee, colleague or leader. Having more than two languages in your C.V. is always a plus with employers, and having mastered English, which is one of the more difficult languages to learn, is extremely useful. It is useful due to its broad usage. One may be able to apply for job positions in various countries across the globe. Entrepreneurs and businessmen or business women may spread or promote their businesses abroad with ease. Even if life abroad is not an option, there are many multinational corporations recruiting people from all over the world, one of their usual conditions is a basic knowledge of the English language. Additionally, attending international conferences, negotiations with foreign companies, export and import of products, it would all be a piece of cake just by speaking the English language.
